Brides-to-be browse gowns and more at wedding expo
News from The Augusta Chronicle:

That’s all the time Crystal Cornine has to book a venue, choose a caterer and design invitations, not to mention find the perfect dress for her dream wedding.

When she heard about the inaugural Brides and Bouquets expo at the Augusta Convention Center, she thought Sunday was as good a day as ever to kick off the whirlwind of planning.

“We just want everyone to have a good time,” Cornine said of her big day.

Hundreds of brides and grooms-to-be attended The Augusta Chronicle’s Brides and Bouquets expo Sunday, where more than 40 vendors offered wedding ideas and products to make the planning process easier. The event closed with a fashion show where women showed off dresses from The House of the Bride and men modeled suits and tuxedos from Simon’s Formal Wear.

The expo was created to give local vendors more opportunity to reach couples who are planning a wedding, said Ashlee Duren, the Chronicle’s director of marketing and events.

Brides were serenaded at the door by the violins and cello of the Magellan String Quartet, members of the Augusta Symphony. Inside, they were able to browse everything from bridesmaid dresses to different types of whiskey.

Simple Bliss event planning company co-owner Misty Cooper said planning a wedding can be one of the most overwhelming and expensive decisions in life.

Wedding Q. and A.

Wedding Q. and A.
News from New York Times:

When the Guest Shows Up, but the Gift Doesn’t

I am a newlywed. Our wedding was lovely, but weddings always have one or two issues, and I can’t seem to move on from this one.

My husband and I paid for most everything in our wedding, with some help from our parents. This past summer, my fiancé and I spent some time with an old childhood friend of mine, whom I initially was not going to invite (even though he invited me to his wedding the year before). I didn’t think fast enough when he asked about the wedding, and I told him the invitation was in the mail (and it was a day later).

On another visit later that summer, my friend, newly divorced, half-jokingly told me he didn’t have any money to buy us a wedding gift. Long story short, after this display of vulgarity, I decided to be equally vulgar. I called him to say we are paying for the wedding ourselves, are only inviting a limited number of guests and unfortunately do not have room for his divorced (although they are still trying to work it out) wife. He assured me he will “pay his way” and asked if he could ple…………… continues on New York Times

BRIDAL GUIDE: How to plan a honeymoon
News from Southernminn.com:

When planning your honeymoon, a travel agent can help you find your dream trip while saving you time and money.

They know what questions to ask, which places to go to, and often save you money, according to theknot.com, a wedding planning website.

“We often have our own promotions and discounts,” said Travel Agent Sheila Michels, of Hometown Travel in St. Peter. “And because of our large number of bookings, we get discounts also.”

Another benefit of working with a travel agent is that they are often familiar with potential destinations for honeymooners. Michels said that she will travel to different locations and inspect them and build up a rapport with the staff. She said that the relationship between a travel agent and the resorts can lead to more accommodating treatment for honeymooners.

Nina Meyer of Absolutely Cruises & Travel in Le Center said that travel agents can help couples find their perfect place for a honeymoon.

“Couples often want to go to a place where they feel special,” said Meyer. “There are places that will recognize honeymooners and will treat them as honeymooners.”

Both Michels and Meyer said that couples will…………… continues on Southernminn.com

Wedding Dress Shopping: Boutiques Mail Gowns You Can Try On At Home
News from Huffington Post:

There’s a new way to shop for a wedding dress, and it doesn’t even require leaving your house.

Bridal designer Kirstie Kelly recently launched a program called “Borrow Me,” which allows brides to order gowns from the website, keep them for two days to try on, and either buy them or mail them back. It costs $ 35 to borrow each dress.

Another bridal company, The Dessy Group, also offers a similar program.

With the harsh lighting and too-small sample sizes that often come with shopping in a bridal boutique, the idea of trying on dresses at home is pre…………… continues on Huffington Post

Put a Ring On It: Can an Engagement Ring Impact Your Career?
News from Huffington Post:

If you’re anything like me, you probably have a few friends who just got engaged and you are already figuring out how you are going to make to six weddings in three months time. Plus, I recently just watched Lord of the Rings. Basically, rings have been on my mind. Specifically, how rings impact women when they go on job interviews. It seems silly. Why should a little accessory impact your potential as a candidate for a job? Well, it shouldn’t, but as we know, an engagement rings represent a lot more than a piece of jewelry.

Some people view an engagement ring as a sign of stability. Some look at it as a sign that a woman may drop out of the work force soon to raise a family. Some people think the size of a ring says a whole lot about your lifestyle. However, there seems to be no clear answer about whether a ring can really help you or hurt you in a job interview. A recent survey done by Forbes Woman in collaboration with TheKnot.com and WeddingChannel.com found that around 29 percent of women said that an engagement ring would improve the woman’s chances of being hired while…………… continues on Huffington Post

Wedding Dress Shows Bride’s Emotions Using LED Lights, Pulsating Flowers …
News from Huffington Post:

A bride is often a bundle of emotions on her Big Day. Two Canadian designers have created a wedding gown that incorporates those intense emotions into the fabric of her dress.

Earlier this month, Wynnie Chung, a student at Simon Fraser University, and Emily Ip, a SFU grad, designed a dress called Wo.Defy that measures the wearer’s breathing, heart rate and movement. These measurements activate LED lights and pulsating fabric flowers built into the dress, resulting in a gown that moves and glows depending on the wearer’s emotional state (watch the video above for more details).

Chung and Ip were inspired by

Wedding planning brings family baggage to forefront
News from The Seattle Times:

Dear Carolyn

Adapted from a recent online discussion.

DEAR CAROLYN: My boyfriend (45) and I (38) have been discussing marriage. I suggested elopement because my family is nuts, especially my mom. Currently she is not speaking to me — neither is the rest of the family, or she will stop speaking to them — because (a) I refused to give over to her or my sister a modest inheritance from my grandmother (my plan was to use it for the wedding), and (b) I asked her to stop posting passive-aggressive comments on my Facebook wall in reference to the inheritance.

My boyfriend is close to his family, so eloping would hurt their feelings, and they are super nice and welcoming to me. I can’t, however, take the chance of my family ruining such an important occasion like they have ruined high school, college and Ph.D. graduations; grandma’s funeral; sister’s wedding, to name some.

How do we tell his family we want to elope so I don’t burn bridges with them, but not make my family sound like the nutters they are? Yes, my boyfriend is OK with eloping; it’s in breaking it to his family that we find ourselves in a pickle.

— C.

DEAR C.: “But not make my family sound like the nutters they are”: That ship has sailed. Stop worrying about how your family appears to others. They’re not you.

“So I…………… continues on The Seattle Times

Bridal donation drive gives gowns, grave sites new life
News from Sanford Herald (registration):

Feb. 19, 2013 @ 05:00 AM

SANFORD —

One local group hopes to breathe new life into women’s wedding dresses — all for the hope of restoring abandoned cemeteries.

The Heritage Foundation Inc., a local organization that restores cemeteries, is soliciting new or gently used bridal gowns and accessories for its first Second-Chance Bridal Extravaganza Donation Drive. Dresses can be dropped off until March 31, said Heritage Executive Director Lisa Martin Sanders.

“After the dresses are collected, we will select a venue to sell the dresses for a donation or discount,” Sanders said.

Wedding dresses can be extremely expensive — especially to only be worn once, she said. This gives women a chance to find their special dress at a discount and allows a dress the second chance at being loved, Sanders said.

“No one wears the same dress again, even if they are remarried,” she said. “This way, women can clear out their closets and make a donation to a good cause. It’s a win-win.”

The Heritage Foundation is collecting donations to finish restoring the Black Heritage Community Cemetery near Buffalo Presbyterian Church, a project the Heritage Foundation began in 2011. After Sanders began the search to find the grave site of W.B. Wicker, she discovered he was buried in an unmarked cemetery along with her grandfather.
